Defended the U.S. Retirement System

With the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, lawmakers have taken an important step to protect Americans’ retirement savings by continuing the tax treatment of their accounts.

But the work isn’t done. There are more opportunities for Americans with an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or similar account to promote the strength of our retirement system and encourage policymakers to build on it.

Retirement in the U.S.

The vast majority of Americans benefit from tax-advantaged retirement accounts.

Average household retirement assets are nearly ten times what they were 50 years ago, when adjusted for inflation. This surge in wealth has been propelled largely by IRAs, 401(k)s, and similar accounts, which provide retirement security for families of all backgrounds and income levels.

Historic Support for the System

"When you see the rest of the world—when you see the shift in policy in Japan right now—they want 401(k) and IRA-style opportunities in their [retirement] marketplace. They see a huge benefit to the domestic economy and the social safety net to do this. And they’re making an active choice to be like the United States.”

– Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC)
